Hybrid polariton-electron systems

The demonstration of polariton lasing in a quantum microcavity with incoherent optical pumping was a major step forward for the use of the regime of strong coupling in optoelectronic applications. However, the creation of the device with potential of commercialization required the implementation of the electric pumping scheme, where excitons are created not in the process of photo-absorption. but due to the binding of free electrons and holes injected in the system via applied electrodes. The race for the realization of electrically pumped polariton laser ended in 2013 when it was reported in Nature publication.
